"Hatchet" is a young adult novel by Gary Paulsen that tells the story of Brian Robeson, a 13-year-old boy who crash lands a plane in the Canadian wilderness and must survive for months using only a hatchet. The book explores themes of perseverance, positive thinking, self-reliance, and the human spirit.

The 7th graders have been working on identifying story elements including plot, characterization, and theme in different short stories. In the coming days, they will be taking a test on these skills.
Next week, we will begin reading The Shadow Club. It is always a student favorite! While reading this class novel, students will continue working on identifying different story elements.
The 8th Grade will wrap up their study of "suspenseful" short stories this quarter and write their narrative summative.
In the second half of the month, we'll start our Q2 unit which focuses on opposing perspectives. Students will read articles that feature opposing viewpoints and then evaluate how each author's techniques affect the reader. Students will learn how to create their arguments using relevant and reliable evidence.
