6th Grade
It’s been a great start to the new year in 6th grade science. We have been working on middle school procedures, skills, and tips for an easier year. We are also talking about ARK= Accountability, Responsibility, and Kindness which are the DMS Core Values. We will focus on these throughout the year as we create a community where students can feel comfortable to learn and share.
We took our Lab Safety summative assessment on Friday, August 30, 2024. Per the D300 Grade Policy, all missing assignments are due Tuesday, September 3rd. And will not be accepted for a grade after that. The students are aware of this due date.
Following Lab Safety Unit we will begin a simulation where students take on the roles of scientists and engineers as we investigate a new exoplanet. Through this activity, students will learn about how objects move in space and the science and engineering practices that are used to answer questions and solve problems. We will continue with space science after that.
PS. Sewer lice lunch is available from Ms. LaGrippe. LOL

As we start our year we begin with characteristics of living things. Students have had several opportunities to explore materials to determine if they are living or not, and what that really means. Moving forward we will continue to expand on our knowledge of the CER process. Claim, Evidence and Reasoning are how scientists explain how they know what they know. We will end the unit with a summative CER writing. You can practice these skills at home by supporting claims with evidence from your daily lives.
You can support your child at home by asking them to log into Schoology and showing you their posted activities and current grades. If you have questions please send their teacher an email.

What makes a rocket sled snowplow move? This is the driving question students will investigate in the first unit of Physical Sciences: Rocket Sled. With a learning target focused on changes in motion when two objects collide, students will ask questions, develop models, and be able to explain how forces affect the motion of a system.
The school year kicked-off with a mini-unit of community building, expectations, lab safety and some scientific vocabulary. Eighth graders are the scientists in class and will be using a science notebook to make observations and record their data. This is a great tool to measure growth as we take on Physical Science for the year!
