"Hatchet" is a young adult novel by Gary Paulsen that tells the story of Brian Robeson, a 13-year-old boy who crash lands a plane in the Canadian wilderness and must survive for months using only a hatchet. The book explores themes of perseverance, positive thinking, self-reliance, and the human spirit.
While we read "Hatchet" we will be focusing on summarizing, characterization, theme, and narrative writing.
The 7th graders have been working on identifying story elements including plot, characterization, and theme in different short stories. In the coming days, they will be taking a test on these skills.
Next week, we will begin reading The Shadow Club. It is always a student favorite! While reading this class novel, students will continue working on identifying different story elements.
The 8th Grade started strong with their analysis of point of view and other literary elements when they read "The Monkey's Paw" by W.W. Jacobs. They'll continue to read "suspenseful" short stories this quarter before writing their own narrative for a summative grade.
We are also having fun learning different Latin & Greek Roots. After a few quizzes, the students will take a summative test near the end of the quarter. For now, ask your child about today's "Root of the Day."
