Nope! Most students who enter as freshmen have never tried color guard before. We teach you everything you need to know, and we will have all summer to work on the fundamental skills. Simply having a try-your-best attitude, an open mind, and a willingness to practice are all things any good color guard candidate would need to succeed.
Yes! In high school it is important that you have the opportunity to try many things. We will work with schedules and coaches/sponsors to assure you can participate in both your fall sports/activities and color guard.
No! There is no requirement to be in band in order to do color guard (However we do welcome any non-marching instrumentalists to join us). The color guard is filled primarily with students who do not play an instrument. Color guard welcomes all students to join, with no music or guard experience required.
The color guard season starts as early as the spring of your 8th Grade year! We invite the incoming freshmen to march with us in the Memorial Day Parade, and around April we begin rehearsals. The parade work is easy to learn, and you get to meet other incoming freshmen while we practice! This parade is combined with the marching bands and color guards of Crystal Lake South and Prairie Ridge, so there are many new friends to make along the way. While it is not required to join before the Memorial Day Parade, planning for the fall takes place early in the summer, so joining color guard sooner rather than later is important.
Yes. Being in color guard shows any potential colleges that you are responsible, timely, committed, and an involved member of your school community! Additionally, many students who sign up for color guard in college receive course credits and/or generous scholarships for participation in their university/college marching band. No. Color guard will be an important, and memorable part of your high school experience, but it will not take up all of your time. During the fall season, we normally rehearse Mon/Wed 5-7pm with the marching band and additionally rehearse alone as a guard section. We get to perform at all home football games, and attend up to 4 local marching band festivals during the season. You will have time to explore other interests, and of course devote time to your studies, while still enjoying color guard!
