On April 26, Stevenson traveled to Illinois State University for the ICTM State meet and placed 4th overall in the state with 923 points! The Stevenson Freshman-Sophomore 2-Person and Calculator teams placed first across the entire state, as well as Jonathan He in the individual competition!

… and in a crazy circle of life, we will start our math team meeting by proof-reading the junior high math contest questions that we wrote together. It is how many of our seniors started their SHS MATH TEAM careers.
Random food potluck! Let’s have some snacks. =). Please bring some snacks to share at our meeting! Not required that you bring anything, but we will have a food table where you can drop off some food and grab some food! =). Extra box of girl scout cookies? Bring them! You have a new sleeve of crackers? Bring them! Fruit? Drinks? Bananas? Not-expired-halloween-candy? Ummm yeah, you know we’d gobble it up. =)

April 15 is Tax Day. Besides voting, Tax Day is one of the most intimate interactions Americans have with their government.
April 15 is MATH TEAM. Besides math class, MATH TEAM is one of the most intimate interactions students have with mathematics.
Many of your teachers (and parents) are hoping to collect a nice return. In MATH TEAM, we are preparing for a nice return to the podium as we get ready for the state tournament.
This Tuesday will (very likely) be our second-to-last MATH TEAM Tuesday of the year! Don’t write this one off! Come ready to itemize your strategies and audit your accuracy. We will spend most of our time grinding through the fine print of the state math code to squeeze out all the value we can for the 2025 annual year.
More deadlines! As we announced this week in our Tuesday MATH TEAM, our applications are open for both eboard and modeling teams. Applications are due Monday night – April 14 at 11:59 pm.

Ok… there’s actually a lot of info we need to get out. I’ll take the sling off and type the rest of this email with two hands.
1. Believe it or not there are only 2 more Tuesdays before state! This week, next week, and then we lose a week because of ACT testing. In that light, we will likely sit for a full-length exam this Tuesday (some grade levels will be doing other things). It is helpful to sit for a full length exam with peers around you in a pseudo-stressful environment as we prepare for state. Whether or not you sit for the competition, it will be good to do rigorous math for 50 minutes… or as close as we can get. It is the same reason why practicing the WHOLE ACT in one sitting is better than practicing just a little here and there. Good luck to those taking the ACT this week… max out that math section!!!
2. Believe it or not, we will have fewer MATH TEAM Tuesdays than there are fingers on your left hand!
3. Believe it or not, we will be looking for new e-board members for MATH TEAM! That’s right. We decided that ALL of our senior leaders: Jaden Audrey, Diana, and Lillian, will no longer be fit to lead us next year. They will not be asked back. Yup. We’re cutting them lose. So long! Adios! Bu-bye! We will describe the process to apply for our e-board in our meeting this week.
4. Believe it or not, our math modeling season is done. Our Junior team of Richard, Jonathan, Angela, Tanav, and Kritik made it as semi-finalists in the Modeling the Future Challenge and through the triage round of the M3Challenge. Super achievements! Congrats to our juniors! Our senior modeling team of Lillian, Audrey, Diana, Jaden, and Catherine finished as semi-finalists in the M3Challenge and scooped up a tidy $1500 in scholarship money. Congrats to our seniors! This means we will be looking for the next generation of modeling teams. We will describe the process to apply as a modeling team in our meeting this week.

Dear Mathletes,
After much reflection, I have decided it is time to let you know some big news. Some of you have already heard, but I will be retiring from Stevenson after this year. I have treasured my time as a MATH TEAM coach, treasured your successes in service and competition, treasured our many conversations about math, life, and learning. But good things must come to an end, and it is time for me to step away.
I have accepted a position at a local university (my old stomping grounds in Evanston) where I’ll be focusing on educational research as it relates to high school mathematics. While I’m excited for this next chapter, I’m going to miss my Tuesday afternoons with all of you.
The coaches and I have decided that there is no reason to wait for the end of the school year to make this announcement. Tomorrow, we’ll be gathering in 1508/1510 for a final farewell as I will be transitioning into the new position immediately. Yup. This will be my last MATH TEAM meeting. =(.
We’ll share some photos, a few coaches will give speeches, but then we will have to move on and engage in a quick mini-qualifying exam as we prepare for state competition. After all, what better way to end my years of coaching than by taking a math contest with our peers.
Before you start drafting emotional farewell emails or organizing a fun surprise for me…. April Fools!!!
I’m not actually retiring… Well, that’s not true either. I’ve been trying to retire every year for the past five years, but I never seem to be able to pull it off.

Tomorrow in MATH TEAM, we take a break from our heavy competition season and pivot into service to our community again. First, members of our esteemed e-board will lead a talk on question writing for mathematics competitions. Then we will all try our hand at writing questions for the Consortium Math Competition. Many of you probably competed in this junior high competition. In those years, you were the beneficiary of (sometimes brutally difficult) questions written by members of the MATH TEAM. Tomorrow we will begin creating a stockpile of questions that we will use for the 2025 Consortium Math Competition.
As we write, we will have some snacks, and all together sign our trophy from NSML. =)
We are going to bring all four grade levels together into room 1508-1510.
Come by, listen to a talk on how to write high level math team questions, then contribute to the future MATH TEAM by writing questions for the next generation.

On Mar. 6, Stevenson traveled to Glenbrook South High School for the final conference meet of the year. The Stevenson Sophomore team (59 points) and Junior team (75 points) placed second and first respectively out of fifty-four teams on site! Overall, the Stevenson Math Team placed 2nd for the 2024-25 NSML season with 1451 points!

On February 6, Stevenson hosted the fourth conference meet of the school year. The Stevenson freshman, sophomore, and juniors teams all placed first place among on-site teams with 37, 75, and 65 points respectively. As a team, Stevenson was first on-site, beating Glenbrook North 265 to 252!
Wenhan Li (So), Amritha Praveen (So), Eric Zhang (So), and Jonathan He (Jr) all had perfect papers!
The Stevenson sophomore team is in first place across the conference with 289 points. As team, Stevenson (1203) trails in second place behind Whitney Young (1263) heading into Meet 5.

I’ve been wondering if people that don’t like reading my long goofy emails copy and paste it into chatGPT to summarize the main points of the email. So then I thought it would be funny to use chatGPT to take three bullet points, make it into a long email… only to have you use ChatGPT to give you three bullet points of the email again. (!)

There is a lot of chatter about potentially closing school or starting late due to the cold tomorrow. Many schools have already made announcements for remote learning while other nearby districts have announced a 2 hour delay to the school day. What about SHS? Well, I am 95% confident that there is a not a 60% chance that there will not be a non-normal school day schedule tomorrow due to the cold.
Now that we cleared that up, let’s talk about tomorrow.
Tuesday 7:40 AM. Thank you to the 40+ students that have expressed interest in trying out for the 8person team. Check your 8-person google classroom for our room location. Get a ride to school! It will be nice to not have to wait for a bus. We hope to start right at 7:40, so do your best to be on time. I know you are pumped to check out 8 person, but if SHS goes to a late start or cancels, then we will cancel our in person meeting and dispense material in the classroom.
Tuesday 8:30 AM – 3:25 PM. Go support your math teacher! Some of your teachers need a cheerleader – let them know they are doing a good job! Some need to be challenged – tell them about some MATH TEAM questions you are having trouble with. Some need help – give a thoughtful answer or offer an insightful question to help the class be the best it can be.
Tuesday 3:30 – 4:30. We are just over two weeks away from NSML #4. Our time in MATH TEAM will be spent in polishing up ideas regarding systems, right triangles, polynomials, and conics. Some years will dispense a practice contest to simulate the actual contest on February 6. Reminder again that the February 6 contest is hosted here and we invite you all to come and be part of the NSML. The email blast next week will ask for a head count so that we have enough material for everyone.

1. We prepare for NSML. Tomorrow we will teach topics and expose you to topics related to the fourth NSML event of the year. This is an event we host here at Stevenson on February 6, so you are all invited to come! No pressure on making any bus… we invite all interested MATH TEAM members to prepare with us and post an official score for NSML. Please make sure you clear up your schedule on February 6. NSML #4 is the last topic related NSML event of the year. NSML #5 covers the previous 4 topics, so this is the last opportunity to load up on a single topic of study.
2. We will provide details on how to qualify for regional and state competition. It’s a crazy thought, but some MATH TEAM members were able to say for a whole year, “I’m the top math freshman/sophomore/junior in Illinois” or “I’m part of the top 8person team in the state.” To be a part of these teams, you need to come out to MATH TEAM and gain a spot on our roster. Step one is sign up for any team competitions you may be interested in. Individual contests will be dispensed by your coach in the google classroom associated with your year. The rooms below are new. Hello to the 320 folks on the MATH TEAM email blast!
As winter break comes to an end, many of you may be grappling with a condition known as Returnophobia—a post-break outbreak characterized by a reluctance to return to routines and a longing for endless winter vacation. Fortunately, MATH TEAM has been FDA approved as a proven remedy.
What Is Returnophobia?
Returnophobia (re-turn-oh-FOH-bee-uh) is a temporary condition among students that presents with symptoms such as:
A strong resistance to setting alarms.
Inability to focus for prolonged periods of time.
Repetition of senseless activities.
Repetition of senseless activities.
Repetition of senseless activities.
It often occurs alongside Motivational Deficit Disorder (MDD), a state where zero mental inertia cannot overcome the coefficient of Getoutabed.
Your Treatment Plan
1. Ease back into the school year. MATH TEAM normally meets on Tuesday, but we will pause on January 7, 2025. That way you can keep your afternoon nap routine on day 1 of the semester. =) The pause also allows the coaches and executive board members a week to plan out the rest of the year. MATH TEAM reconvenes for our first meeting of the year on January 14, 2025.
2. The antidote to Returnophobia isn’t a complete shut down into apathy. The best treatment is to reengage with purpose.
Rediscover the peculiar joy that math brings when you get things right.
Remember that problems are simply the difference between what one has and what one wants.
Reconnect with peers who share your drive and curiosity.

On December 12, Stevenson traveled to Lake Forest High School for the third conference meet of the school year. The Stevenson freshman, sophomore, and junior teams all placed/tied for first place among on-site teams with 57, 69, and 75 points respectively. As a team, Stevenson was first on-site, beating Libertyville 292 to 257!
Wenhan Li (So), Eric Zhang (So), Andre Dreesen (Jr), Andrea Gualdron (Jr), Jonathan He (Jr), Kaden Jeon (Jr), Rhubyn Letuchy (Jr), Tanav Ravella (Jr), Shreyan Sarkar (Jr), Richard Xu (Jr), and Lylian Zhu (Jr) all had perfect papers!
The Stevenson Sophomore and Junior teams remain in first place across the conference, and as team, Stevenson is tied with Whitney Young for first place in the conference (938 points).
Woot! Almost the end of 2024!
Can you believe there are only two more weeks this semester? Amazing.

1. NSML 3
Get in your focus cave and prepare NSML 3 material! This week Thursday we will take 40ish kids to Lake Forest High School where we hope to continue to separate from the pack. It is not without effort! Get into your google classroom and grind out another idea, read up another few pages, and look through one more contest. That. Will. Make. A. Difference. It really will. If your content knowledge is there, then practice will work out the silly mistakes, the misread questions, and the time scramble for not working efficiently.
It is quite likely we will have our last vetting contests at your grade level meetings tomorrow, so work to make it onto the bus! =)

Hi MATH TEAM
This week, we do not have our usual MATH TEAM meeting. Many are already out for Thanksgiving break, and we want to get out of your way to… well… get out of here Tuesday and celebrate time off! But we have a special challenge for you! As Thanksgiving approaches, let’s take some time to express gratitude in a mathy way. Choose one or more of these options to complete before next week:
1. Write a quick email to a teacher thanking them for being a great teacher or for supporting you in your math journey. Even a few kind words can make their day!
2. Write your own gratitude function with defined inputs. Here is an example:
3. Get into your google classroom and do some problems assigned by your MATH TEAM coach. The next NSML is soon after we get back. Most classrooms will be doing a vetting contest after some more ideas on Tuesday December 3 when we meet again.

Not many choose to embrace math willingly. Most students scrape by, doing just enough math to earn a grade. But not us. We’re the mis-fits.

And now for what to expect on Tuesday
It’s incredible to believe that the last time we met together was before the Math Carnival! We will start our meeting in two rooms… sophomores and seniors in 1500/1502. Freshmen and juniors in 1508/1510. We’ll start by celebrating the success of the Math Carnival and passing out some awards from NSML #2. Then we begin our efforts in the next topics.
Frosh:
Basic Statistics: May include measures of central tendency (mean, median, and mode), box-and-whisker plots, two-way tables, stem and leaf, range. No variance. No standard deviation.
Soph:
Circles: Standard material. May include arcs, area, angles, power theorems, inscribed and circumscribed polygons, sectors and segments. Does not include trig nor equations of circles
Jr:
Logarithms and Exponentials: May include domain and range, graphing, logarithms with positive bases including natural and base ten logs, emphasis on properties, exponential and logarithmic growth and decay, and applications. No complex numbers.
Sr:
Vectors: (Previously called Vector Analytic Graphing) May include two dimensional vector applications, two and three dimensional vectors, equations of lines and planes in space, scalar, cross products, perpendicularity and parallels, distance between points, lines, and planes. No calculus
No contests this week, just some introductions and practice.
Then at 4:30, those that signed up for CaLiOt should meet in 1500/1502.
The Olympiad Training should start by 4:35 and end around 5:20. For the 30+ that signed up, a problem set will be emailed to you tomorrow to familiarize yourself with the topic and notation before hearing from our senior students Caden and Lillian.

On November 7, Stevenson traveled to University of Chicago Lab for the second conference meet of the school year. The Stevenson freshman, sophomore, and senior teams all placed/tied for second place among on-site teams with 70, 70, and 63 points respectively. The junior team beat all other junior teams with 69 points!
Debarghya Das (Fr), Amarjot Singh (Fr), Wenhan Li (So), Eric Zhang (So), Jonathan He (Jr), Angela Ho (Jr), and Lillian Wang (Sr) all had perfect papers.
Despite placing second to Walter Payton at the meet (losing by only 1 point!), Stevenson remains in first place in the conference standings, 24 points ahead of Whitney Young!

It’s carnival time!!!
Here’s what to expect:
After school on Tuesday, as soon as the after school traffic clears, artboards and booths will be set up at the point and in the wood commons. Be sure to have all your booth material ready including print out decorations you want to put on your booth! Some extra markers, tape, and balloons, will be at your booth with its booth number. Be sure to know what your booth number is! Checking-in will simply entail being at your assigned booth, going through your booth envelope, and decorating. You will have time to decorate the day of, but be sure to have your stuff ready! Then at 5 we will meet in 2104 for a pizza dinner and some last instructions.
From 6 – 8 PM, it should be non-stop kids, math, math bucks, smiles, learning, laughing, high-fives, shouts of “great job!”, taking photos, prizes, snacks, and good-feels all around.

We get to MATH-amos again manana!
We start-amos with some updates on the Math Carnival
We then sign-up-amos for a special AMC/AIME/USAMO training. The first event is onOctober 22, from 4:30 – 5:30, right after MATH TEAM
The majority of the time will be in preparing-amos for our next NSML event. No vetting contents yet… just training-amos and learning-amos with our amigos.
Check your google classrooms for material and get a leg up on the material.
Also be sure to keep attacking-amos AMC questions on your own! Don’t be picky. Just load up the 2023 AMC and get to it. Do problems and check answers. You really can’t replace experience, and you can microwave gains… just do the work! Systematically work chronologically backwards to 2022, 2021… as your capacity allows.

Woah… October first… palindrome.
I wonder how many MATH TEAM days in the last 4 years met on a palindrome day when written as monthDay, like October 1: 1001. I wonder if there is a slick way to calculate that.
Numbers are endlessly fascinating.
On to some news:
1. On our 2024_0910 email, we talked about prospective hindsight. We entertained a thought experiment that allowed us to consider what was done to be successful in NSML #1. How did it go? Take a look
On Tuesday we will celebrate the successes we had from our downtown Chicago trip and pass out some ribbons. We definitely celebrate the effort that led to success
2. But we know that ribbons and standings are a symbol of one point in time. We can’t get attached to that. Take a look at the Topics for NSML #2
We want YOU to be part of our south-side Chicago trip to the University of Chicago on November 7.
3. While we prepare for NSML #2, we are also preparing for our largest community service event for MATH TEAM: The Math Carnival. We will devote the first 20 minutes of our meeting this week to forming groups and organizing ourselves for the October 29 event.
4. The AMC competition is also around the corner. So not only are we preparing for NSML #1, preparing for the Math Carnival, we also want to help you prepare for the AMC. If you are taking the AMC 10, it’s time to turn on the grind and power through problems

Adhijyot Chadha (Fr), Debarghya Das (Fr), Amarjot Singh (Fr), Wenhan Li (So), Amritha Praveen (So), Eric Zhang (So), Tony Zhou (So), Jonathan He (Jr), Aditya Gupta (Sr), Audrey Hong (Sr), and Mark Yang (Sr) all had perfect papers.
With 325 points out of a possible 350, Stevenson sits in first place in the conference standings, 12 points ahead of Glenbrook North.

You do your best work when you have great competitors.
For the last few weeks, we have been working and training, studying and preparing. Yes, competing for the privilege to represent SHS at the first NSML event, but also competing against our own selves to learn more and improve in math. I know for so many of us, we have met this goal of improvement. Take pride in that.
On Tuesday we will do one last push in probability preparation with everyone in MATH TEAM. We will learn through problems together, share strategies for different problems, and again enjoy the feeling of getting questions right.
We will also juggle the room assignments a bit.

You’re probably getting better at probability. =)
I know it’s hard to tell at times, but listen…
You try a problem, get it wrong, and think, “That was bad! Waaaa!!! =(. “
No! Don’t throw it out! It didn’t work, but what did it lead to? What ideas were redeemable, and what ideas need to be re-evaluated? Did you loosen up rigid ways of looking at things?
When you’re learning, don’t worry about being right. Focus on generating ideas and finding patterns in the problems you see. Alternate ways to consider a problem are always present if one bothers to look for them. Trust that the improvement is happening.
So be encouraged! Pick up another problem set from the google classroom and work! Work! WORK!
That kid that is amazing at violin… you know what that kid does a lot? practice.
That kid that is amazing at volleyball… you know what that kid does a lot? Practice.
That kid that is amazing at math… you know what that kid does a lot? PRACTICE!
Your coaches are giving you the right problems. You got to go and practice with them.
Those problem sets are simply the difference between what you have and what you want…
Now to some announcements.
This Tuesday, we are going to bring the whole gang together in room 1508/1510 for the first 20 minutes. Yup… bring the chaos. Frosh/Soph/Jr/Sr grades will meet in room 1508/1510 to start our meeting. There we will formally introduce our first community service event: The Math Carnival. =). It’s going to be amazing. Take joy in being the reason.
After our announcements, we will spread out into our separate rooms: Sophomores in 1500. Seniors in 1502. Juniors in 1506. Freshment in 1508/1510. In those rooms we will be taking our second vetting contest or reviewing probability strategies, depending on your grade level.

Let’s run a few exercises in prospective hindsight – a mental hack that travels you into the future only to look back on past events (though still in the future) with the clarity of hindsight.
1. First we jump to September 24, 2024
You are pumped for making it onto the bus for NSML #1! How did you get here? By grinding out problems on your own since early September. By studying a few more contests on your google classroom. There are plenty of smart kiddos at your grade level, but the extra moments of work is what distinguishes your abilities. You’re glad you put in the time to learn a few more ideas and make it onto the bus.
2. Next we jump to September 25, 2024
You handed in your contest a few minutes ago and are now talking to the other Patriots at your grade level. Crazy! You think you got all the questions right! One of the extra ideas from your coaches and some of the extra problems from e-board members prove to be crazy useful, and you scooped up a ton of points for SHS! =) You took your time and feel great about your effort.
3. It’s 10 PM on September 25, 2024
Hundreds of mathletes across the Chicagoland area are refreshing the NSML site… and it looks like Stevenson is at the top of the rankings! Crazy! You’re pumped to be part of the reason why. Whether you made it on the bus or not, you have been studying probability, you have been giving and receiving ideas from other patriot mathletes, and you know you can handle yourself a bit better when it comes to probability.
So there it is, with the benefit of hindsight, know that it is worth it to work out another contest, to muddle through a SINGLE! problem for over 20 minutes until it makes sense, to read up on different resources related to probability. Let’s do it! With the clarity of hindsight, I encourage you to go to your google classroom and crank out another problem!
There is such a peculiar and specific joy in making mathematics bow to your will. Go get it!

Ma-ma-ma-Maaaath Team!
Welcome to your weekly MATH TEAM blast, and a warm “aloha” to the 8 new people added to our distribution list.
In our first meeting last week, we had 99 students sign in to 5-Star. Thank you! Two things about that number. First, the eye-ball test tells me that we had closer to 150 kids. Second, from our sample of 6 e-board members (names seen in the cc: line), only (gulp) 3 signed up in 5-Star last week. That makes our numbers possibly as high as 200… a hilariously large number of students. =). As we start up our meeting this week Tuesday, please be sure to login to 5Star as that is how we build out our official roster.
To have a little bit more elbow room and be a little bit less of a fire hazard, we will split into two double rooms. In fact, we usually split into multiple rooms throughout the year so that we can give everyone a bit more attention. This week:
Freshmen and Juniors will be in room 1508/1510
Sophomores and Seniors will be in room 1500/1502
Please come out this week so that we can make sure you are on our roster, make sure you are in the correct google classroom, and to receive a field trip form that works for the whole year. We hope you can make it to one or more of our various competitions, but in order to be eligible, we will need that field trip form.
Most of our time Tuesday will be spent practicing and hearing from coaches or e-board members about our first topic: Probability.
More specifically:
Frosh: Counting Basics and Simple Probability: The emphasis is on organized thinking, not using formulas. May include tree type problems, combinations, and permutations. Any calculator (even CAS) is allowed.

Jr: Probability: The standard treatment of probability. It may include combinations, permutations, mutually exclusive events, dependent and independent events, conditional probability, and expected value. Does not include binomial distribution. Any calculator (even CAS) is allowed.
Sr: Probability: May include combinations, permutations, mutually exclusive events, dependent and independent events, conditional probability, Bayes’ Theorem, binomial distribution, expected value, and geometric probability. Any calculator (even CAS) is allowed.
Please bring your calculators Tuesday! For those that want to dabble with the TI nSpire CAS calculators, please speak with Mr. Anderson or myself during our meeting.

MATH TEAM, assemble!!! … and a big hello to the 13 new people added to our weekly email blast!
This week Tuesday is our first MATH TEAM meeting of the year! For those of you who have been part of our community, we’re excited to see you again! For those of you who are Spring athletes, we’re excited to have you back! For those of you who are not sure about coming, well…
Our first meeting tends to draw lots of peeps – certainly big enough for you to come and check it out in the lovely cover of a large crowd. Be brave! Try something new while a bunch of others are checking out something new too. No prerequisites and no commitments. Our first few meetings are a celebration of people and learning under the banner of MATH. Whether you come on your own or with a buddy, you will leave knowing what MATH TEAM does, how to get involved, and who else is part of MATH TEAM.
Here are some answers to questions I have received in the last few days… hopefully it will make you more confident and excited about Tuesday.
Where do we meet? Room 1508 / 1510 (a double classroom)
When do we meet? Tuesday at 3:35 until 4:30 (Every week at this time)
Do I need to be in a certain math class to join? Any and all students are welcome to learn, compete, and participate in our community events.
Do I need to bring anything? Nope. But feel free to bring a friend if that is more comfortable
What will we be doing? We will introduce events, introduce the staff, talk through all kinds of MATH opportunities for the year, sign up for some events, then play a game from our e-board… with prizes!!!
What if I don’t know anyone? No problem. The MATH TEAM coaches are in the to: line of this email. Introduce yourself to us at our meeting and we can chat. Say hello to the e-board members in the cc: line of this email. They will be the ones wearing name tags and a big smile. And really, everybody is kinda new… let’s all be the chill, accepting, and joyful person we hope to encounter. =)

The shock of school is amazing.
Whether you are a freshman about to start your high school career, a senior getting ready to lord over this school, or someone in between, there are a shocking number of questions. Who will I have lunch with? Are my teachers going to be any good? Do I remember how to wake up early? What should I wear to school on the first day? Where is my school backpack?
One question you don’t have to answer is, What should I do on Tuesday after school? MATH TEAM is faithful. MATH TEAM has been waiting for you.
But not quite yet. Pace yourself this first week and get used to the mechanic of school. MATH TEAM will not meet this week. The coaches (in the to: line) and the e-board (in the cc: line) will take this week to get ready for our first meeting on:
