Mr. Kim began his teaching career in a quiet suburb of San Jose, Costa Rica.  His teaching assignment was second grade math, seventh grade math, eighth grade math, world history, US history, … and he was the high school gym teacher.  Though he loved his time there, he was teaching for free (college loans needed some attention) and dating a girl in Chicago (to whom he is now married).  So, he came back to Chicago and found a job at Stevenson.

Mr. Kim began teaching at Stevenson during the 2002-2003 school year.  Through the years he has taught Algebra 1, Geometry, Geometry Honors, Algebra 2, Algebra 2 Accelerated, Honors Algebra 2, Pre-Calculus, Pre-Calculus Honors, and AP Statistics.  As a math team coach, he spent the first few years as the freshman advisor, was the oralist coach for several years, served as the sophomore coach, is now the senior coach, and has been the head coach since the 2017-2018 school year.  Mr. Kim also coached volleyball for the boys and girls program at Stevenson for over 20 seasons and was the first sponsor for the Korean club.

In high school, Mr. Kim did not even know there was such a thing as math team.  Niles North is not exactly the mecca for high school math.  Still, he enjoyed math enough to become a math major at Northwestern.  His proudest math nerd math moment was attending a 6-week math camp in Park City, Utah in 2014. 

Mr. Anderson has been teaching high school mathematics for 9 years. He currently teaches AP Calculus AB and Mathematical Modeling and Design.  For math team, Mr. Anderson coaches the sophomore team, calculator team, is the site organizer for the AMC and assists with Chicago ARML.  Mr. Anderson completed his Bachelor’s degree at Trinity International University with a double major in Mathematics and Secondary Education, and completed his master’s degree in Mathematics for Teaching at DePaul University. Outside of teaching, Mr. Anderson enjoys hiking outside (recommend: catching a sunrise at Lake Michigan), board games (recommend: Wingspan)  and music (fun fact: he plays bass guitar and owns 14 strings worth of bass guitars).

Ms. Koe’s passion for math began in high school and she competed in the ICTM regional and state competitions. She attended the University of Iowa her freshman year to pursue an engineering degree, but soon realized she had a passion for students, loved math, and enjoyed teaching. So, she transferred to Illinois State University where she completed her Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics with an endorsement in Education. In college, she enjoyed Calculus and Graph Theory and published some research papers.

Ms. Koe has been teaching for 3 years and has taught Geometry Accelerated, Algebra 2, and Foundations of Algebra 1. In her free time, Ms. Koe enjoys playing volleyball, playing guitar and
piano, and traveling.

Mr. Der attended Conant High School, where he was captain of the Math Team. He later attended Vanderbilt University, where he earned a Bachelor’s in Mathematics and Secondary Education (plus a minor in Psychology), and he also holds a Master’s in Differentiated Instruction. His favorite math topic is enumerative combinatorics.

Mr. Der has been teaching at Stevenson since 2019 and has taught PreCalc Acc., Geometry, Algebra 2, Algebra 2 Acc. and Data Science in his time here. He coaches the junior team for Math Team and is also a sponsor of the Asian-American Student Association at SHS, which you may know from Night Market. When he is not teaching, Mr. Der is most likely in his kitchen (cooking or baking) or in his living room (catching up on all the TV and movies that he misses out on during the work week).

Ms. MacLennan followed in her family’s footsteps and studied to be an actuary at Drake University. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Actuarial Science and Finance with a Minor in Economics. Always having a love for math she realized her preference of working with others, after having her two children. She then received a Master’s in Art of Teaching Mathematics and began teaching high school. She has taught Algebra 1 Collaborative, Algebra 1, Algebra 2 Accelerated, Geometry Honors, Precalculus Honors, and AP Calculus AB throughout her years of teaching.

Ms. MacLennan loves to spend time with her family traveling the world. Scotland has been her favorite trip thus far. She also enjoys the mountains of Colorado where she grew up and loves to hike in Illinois with her much loved German Shepard.
