In the Art and Design Department at UMD there are 5 majors and 4 minors. The majors are Art B.A., Art History B.A., Art Education B.F.A., Graphic Design B.F.A. and Studio Art B.F.A.. The minors include Art, Art History, Arts in Media and Photography. This site focuses on the majors in the Art & Design department will be the degrees connected to studio art; the Bachelor of Arts Degree (Art B.A.), and the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art (Studio Art B.F.A.).
A Bachelor of Arts Degree helps to develop skills that are useful in any field and is completed along with another major and/or minor.
For a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art there are four emphases: digital art and photography; painting, drawing, and printmaking; sculpture and ceramics; and general studio.
This is a flexible degree, studying the arts and providing a strong liberal arts education with studio practice. A B.A. is completed along with another field of study. This degree helps prepare you for a multitude of fields and career paths.
A B.F.A. is a professionally focused degree in a single emphasis that allows you to explore a range of media. Leading you to a career in the field of your choosing.
