The purpose of the Undergraduate Underrepresented Research Program (UURP) is to provide undergraduate Public Health students with research experience and faculty mentorship as well as opportunities for professional growth and development.
No more than 4-6 students per faculty member
1 full academic year required (2 consecutive semesters)
1-5 hours per week (including weekly meeting with mentor)
1-2 weekly meetings with mentor and the remainder is independent work
1 monthly meeting with all students and faculty in the program
Work closely with a UMD Public Health faculty mentor on the faculty's current research OR on the student's research area of interest (See capstone manual for faculty research areas)
Receive up to $1,500 in funding per academic year
Qualify for up to 3.00 internship credits per semester for graduation
Complete research as lead researcher
Learn research methodologies and working with a budget
Learn how to develop a quality research paper and literature review
Present research at poster sessions and at the UMD Public Health Student Showcase
Develop a strong relationship with a professor, which may be invaluable in postgraduate endeavors
Set up CV and resume with faculty advisor
Receive help with the graduate school application process
Priority will be given to students who are first-generation college students and/or are from an underrepresented group.

Recommended courses to be either completed or in progress:
Health and Wellness Strategies for Life (HLTH 1100)
Human Nutrition (HLTH 1470)
Community Health (HLTH 3101)
Research and Evaluation in Health Science (HLTH 2200) in-progress or planned completion within academic year
Complete a 1-page letter of interest outlining research topics of interest.
Include: methodology, your experience, and any unique qualifications as they relate to the program.
Also include: why you would like to participate in the Undergraduate Underrepresented Research Program.
This letter of interest should be provided to the faculty member with whom you would like to work.
