Instrument and equipment funds are available for departments to purchase equipment that will be used in SAIL courses and experiences. Department Heads must apply for these funds.
To qualify for these funds, departments must demonstrate that at least 75% of the instrument or equipment use will occur in courses that engage students in active SAIL experiences. While reasonable safety precautions may be made for instrument or equipment operation, students must be the primary operators and users of this instrumentation and equipment.
The project description must demonstrate an instrument or equipment lifetime of at least 10 years.
The initial budget may include disposables needed for use of the instrument or equipment, but the project plan must demonstrate how the department will support the cost of any needed disposables after the second year.
Application:
Department Heads provide a project description that includes:
The name of the instrument or equipment and a brief description of its use
Courses your department has developed into SAIL experiences that will utilize the instrument or equipment
Other SAIL type experiences in your department in which students will utilize the instrument or equipment
Other research projects that will utilize the instrument or equipment outside of SAIL experiences (<25% time)
The approximate number of students (undergraduate and graduate) that will use the instrument or equipment
An argument for how this instrument or equipment will support student success and the needs of the department.
Applications will be reviewed and receive a response within ten days.
