About the Job:

The Natural Resource Research Institute at the University of Minnesota Duluth is seeking candidates for a Postdoctoral Research Associate position in Environmental Engineering. The postdoc researcher will work primarily with Dr. Chan Lan Chun on a research project on nitrogen cycles coupled with methanogenesis/methanotroph metabolism for developing biological nitrogen treatment. In addition, depending on performance and productivity, the postdoc may be involved in other research projects in environmental microbiology and biotechnology.


The successful candidate will have excellent verbal and written communication skills and will be expected to communicate effectively to a variety of audiences. There will be opportunities to mentor undergraduate and graduate students and contribute to writing grant proposals. The appointment will be for one year with the possibility for multi-year extension depending on job performance and funding availability.

Terms of Employment:

This appointment is a 100%-time, temporary position at last 12 months in duration.


Responsibilities:

• Conduct fundamental research on nitrogen cycling coupled with methane for development of biological nitrogen treatment systems (50%).

• Isotope carbon and nitrogen analysis for batch- and flow-bioreactors (20%).

• Prepares manuscripts and presentations reporting on the results of experiments (20%).

• Assists in the training and supervision of students (10%).

Required Qualifications:

• Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Chemical Engineering, Water Resources, or related field.


Preferred Qualifications:

• Extensive experience with biogeochemical cycling in natural and built environment (e.g., anaerobic microbiology, nitrogen cycling, or methanogens/methanotrophs).

• Demonstrated experience in publishing peer-reviewed scientific papers in high quality journals.

• Experience in high-throughput amplicon sequencing, metagenomics, or qPCR analysis.

• Demonstrated experience with project management.

• Experience or strong interest in design and operation of bioreactor system.

• Experience or strong interest in stable isotope analysis.

• Strong communication skills.
