Flexibility with understanding of numbers is crucial to the development of Invented Algorithms, or strategies based on place value. This routine promotes students thinking about numbers in different ways and encourages students to become more flexible in their understanding of numbers and in their ability to decompose numbers.
This activity is great for teaching young students about how to use math tools virtually. They will learn that numbers can be represented in different ways. Through exploration of different tools they will begin to decide which tools work best for them, which will support their work in problem solving. (MP.4)
