Choral Counting is a routine in which students count orally by a given number as the teacher records the count on the board. After counting, the students are asked to look at the chart of numbers and answer the question - "What patterns do you notice?" Using different colored markers, each pattern is recorded as it is noticed. The purpose of a choral count is not only to practice rote counting, but also to engage students in reasoning, predicting, looking for patterns, and justifying what they notice in the count.
