Amy Jennings was born and raised in Southern CA and went to UCLA for her Bachelor of Arts in History and Education (2001) and Masters of Education (2003). She has taught at Lawndale High School's AVID program for 23 years. She holds a National Boards Credential in Social Studies. In addition to AVID 11, she teaches AP United States History and Human Development class (Early College). She also serves as an AP Reader to score AP exams for the College Board and as an instructor for the UCLA AP Readiness Program. She is passionate about preparing our students for college.
In her free time, she likes to spend time with her husband and son frolicking around Downtown L.A., hiking in Palos Verdes, or serving at her church. She has a small handmade jewelry business, eponymously named Amy Jennings Designs. She plans to be in the classroom for another 20 years and has responded without hesitation that her job satisfaction is a 10/10.
Kevin Kim has been teaching at Lawndale High School since 2013. He attended UC San Diego where he majored in Ethnic Studies with a minor in Education Studies. He then attended USC for his teaching credentials and Masters in Education. He loves being an AVID teacher and wishes to see all of his students succeed through hard work and passion!
Kevin is the Social Studies Department Chair and a tech guru. He is the course lead for United States History and teaches all of the United States History Honors sections at Lawndale High School. He also serves on the AVID leadership team and advises the AVID Club board meetings every Wednesday at lunch.
Tuan Hophan been teaching at Lawndale since 2017. He graduated valedictorian from Lawndale in 2012, then got his double bachelor's degrees in Economics and Psychology at UCLA, and later his masters in education from UCLA. He loves teaching all types of Social Studies classes but specifically Psychology and Ethics studies as well as AVID now. He hopes my students come back to the community like he did and contribute in their own way. He also serves as the Equity Coordinator for Lawndale High School.
Dena Almaraz was born and raised in the South Bay and attended CSULB where she earned a Bachelors Degree in Liberal Studies with a concentration in Chicano Latino Studies and a minor in Criminal Justice. She also earned a teaching credential and Masters of Science in Special Education from National University in Los Angeles. In addition to teaching AVID 12, she teaches World History and English 9. This is her 15th year teaching and she truly enjoys working with students at Lawndale High School.
In her free time, you can find her watching the Dodgers and walking her dog, Bennie at the local parks in and around the city. She is also passionate about trying new local coffee cafes.
Monique Lozano is starting her second year of teaching at Lawndale High. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Art History from CSU Long Beach and began her career in the commercial arts industry. Seeking a more meaningful path, she transitioned into education and earned her Master of Arts in Education with a concentration in Special Education from Alder Graduate School of Education. In her free time, she enjoys traveling, gardening, and visiting art exhibitions.
