Jennie has worked in the Chittenden County community supporting families for over twenty years with a focus on helping households navigate the housing and affordable housing systems. Jennie is the co-chair of the Housing Retention Committee within Chittenden County's Homeless Alliance and is working to expand school based support services for students and families across the state.
The Family Resource Coordinator provides direct support to students and families experiencing homelessness, housing insecurity, food insecurity, and other significant challenges of daily living. This role also supports the unique needs of migrant families, families of multilingual learners, and addresses other systemic barriers to student success. The position serves as a bridge between schools, families and community agencies ensuring access to resources and advocacy for under served populations.
CVSD recognizes that the barriers to learning extend far beyond what we typically think about when we discuss education and how students learn. Barriers to learning can take many forms including but not limited to:
Experiencing unstable or substandard housing or being unhoused
Insufficient food in the home and a lack of access to consistent, nutritious food
Living in an unsafe home including homes where domestic violence occurs
Not having access to consistent transportation
Not having access to consistent medical care
Youth living independently
Families who are new to Vermont and the community who do not know how or where to access support services
The Family Resource Coordinator works with CVSD students and families to provide support services, and referrals to services when necessary, with the goal of ensuring that the basic needs of all students and families are met. When basic needs are addressed students are able to more fully engage in the classroom and in the community.
Some of the services the Family Resource Coordinator provides include but are not limited to:
Support with housing stabilization, affordability and habitability services
Accessing food and utility resources
Navigating and accessing healthcare systems
Stabilizing income including applying for unemployment, Reach-Up and disability benefits
Providing information about community resources to students and families who are new to the community and unfamiliar with local resources and organizations
