What is the National Honor Society? from www.nhs.us/about-us.aspx
The National Honor Society (NHS) is the nation's premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students. More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since its beginning in 1921.
Today, it is estimated that more than one million students participate in NHS activities. NHS chapters are found in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, many U.S. territories, and Canada. Chapter membership not only recognizes students for their accomplishments, but challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service.
CVCS National Honor Society qualifications:
The first qualification is academic average, which our committee has determined will be a MINIMUM 92% weighted, cumulative average. If a student in NHS drops below the minimum average and cannot raise it within a semester, the student will be dismissed without recourse from NHS and will not be eligible for reinstatement. Students are initially eligible for NHS application in the fall of their Junior year.
The committee also requires proof of character, leadership, and service. Students provide verifiable proof of extracurricular activities; leadership positions within these activities (can be school, church, or community based activities); and proof of community service. Faculty members give the committee input on student character within the classroom and in other school activities. We consider a student’s integrity, positive behavior and attitude, cooperation with classmates, faculty and staff, and the desire to “do the right thing” in most situations. Failure of a member to uphold these standards may result in dismissal.
A student must demonstrate excellence in all four of these areas (character, scholarship, leadership and service). A student who is weak in one or more areas may not be selected.
Being eligible for membership is NOT a guarantee of selection. This is a competitive process.
