2020-2021 COURSE GUIDE
¡Hola clase! This year is going to be unlike any other, but don’t worry! We will get through it together! Below I have provided key information to help guide you through this course. Please review it with your guardians. This document should serve as a reference throughout the course and it will be updated as needed. Please revisit this document when you have questions about class policies or procedures. Please use my contact information to reach out with any questions that are not addressed herein.

Course basics
Course Description
Spanish 1 is a course created for those students with little to no previous exposure to the language. We will start with basic greetings, the vowel sounds, the Spanish Alphabet, the numbers 1-100, the Spanish calendar, the weather, and more. We will continue to learn about nouns, articles, verbs, adjectives, infinitives, verb forms, conjugation of regular and irregular verbs, sing Spanish songs, recite refranes and rimas, and more.

Use your school email to set up an account in each of these platforms:
Google Classroom for turning in assignments
Zoom for drop-in support and live practice with peers
Edpuzzle for learning lessons at your own pace
Padlet to ask and answer questions of your peers
Quizlet for practicing and learning vocabulary
Flipgrid - for graded Speaking assignments
Seesaw - journal for on-line notes / grammar practice
Duolingo for self-guided language practice

Setting up account:
Login using your school email address
Set your profile picture to a clear picture of your face
Use your full First and Last name as your display name
Before Meeting:
Find a quiet space free of distractions (find earbuds if needed)
Have materials (binder, paper, pencil) ready
Open the day’s assignment in a separate browser
Arrive 5 minutes early
During meeting: SLANT
Sit up, making your face visible
Listen attentively
Ask questions using the chat feature, Answer by raising hand
Use Non-verbal communication, both virtual and visual
Track the speaker, use Speaker mode when appropriate
In break-out rooms:
Use Spanish the entire time
Use Raise hand feature if you have a question or concern

Move on, do other work until your question is answered
Academic integrity
Students are expected to do all of their own work and only their work. Any students involved in copying others’ work or allowing others to copy will receive no credit for that assignment or test, with no opportunity to make up the assignment. Using google translate can be a form of plagiary and any work that is the product of online translation technology will not be received for credit. Serious offenses may be reported to administration and could result in an F for the quarter or the semester.

Semester grade = 40% 1st quarter + 40% 2nd quarter + 20% Final
Grades: A > 89.5%, B > 79.5%, C > 69.5%, D > 59.5%, F < 59.4%
Credit
grading
Some work will be graded for completion or participation and will receive the following marks:
CR = Credit (97%)
PC = Partial Credit (70%)
NC = No Credit (43%)
0 = Received, but zero credit given (re: academic misconduct)
Rubric Grading
Some work will be graded based on a rubric. Unless otherwise specified, the marks are as follows:
EE = Exceeds expectations (100%)
ME = Meets expectations (97%)
AE = Approaching expectations (85%)
BE = Below expectations (73%)
FB = Far below expectations (61%)
Late
Assignments
10% will be deducted per day on all late assignments and projects. After 5 days, the student will receive 50% if they submit complete work.
Media Policy
Students may not record, screenshot, reuse or alter the image of anyone in the class without their knowledge and permission. Students should never post about our class or their classmates on social media without the consent of every person involved.
Email Policy
The turn-around time for emails during the week is 24 weekday hours. You should not expect an email reply over the weekend.
It is the student’s responsibility to email the teacher with enough time to receive a reply before an assignment is due.
Emails should follow proper etiquette: Include a greeting, an informative title, briefly provide relevant information, ask a specific question, make a polite request, and end cordially. Do not use texting language. Use proper spelling and capitalization.
