What happens in the library?
During the school week, students visit the library with their class and their class teacher for 30 minutes each week. Mrs Lim, the librarian, reads mostly non-fiction books to each visiting class, for about 15 minutes, and then students are released to browse, check out and read on their own.
Who comes to the library?
All Portal students and staff visit the Portal library throughout the school week. Students visit with their class teachers once a week for a half hour for directed library learning. Students also visit during recess and lunch. Recess and lunch visits are self-directed but supervised by Mrs Lim, our librarian. Students visit to read, check-out books, draw, and enjoy some quiet time. Staff visit to check -out books, and retrieve classroom material stored in a designated room.
What is the book checkout policy?
All students can check out 2 books and keep them for 2 weeks. Rockhoppers are the exception. Rockhoppers can check out 3 books.
All students can renew their books once (for two more weeks). The exception to that rule is a book-report/speech presentation book which can stay checked-out to you--until your book-report/speech presentation is due. This book is also allowed as a third (or fourth) book check out.
How I can help in the library?
We always need help with re-shelving books and repairing books in our library. We also need help with cutting date-due labels, student assistance on the computers, and stamping. If you have a half hour available anytime during the school day, and would like to help, please send Mrs. Lim an email at lim_jean@cusdk8.org.
When is the library open?
The Murdock-Portal library is open to all every school day between 8:30 am and 1:15 pm.
