Science Expectations

Welcome to Mrs. Jacks’ science class! You will research, question, hypothesize, experiment, model, analyze, and communicate what you know and learn to others about units of study in the Earth, Life and Physical Sciences.

Some of the Science topics we will explore this year include The Scientific Method, The Geological Timeline and the History of Earth, Heat and Density, States of Matter, Plate Tectonics, Characteristics of Living Things, Cell Structure & Functions, Ecosystems and Biomes, Ecology & Environmental Interactions, Human Growth & Development.

We will work and learn to:

• Select and use appropriate tools and technology to perform tests, collect data, and display data.

• Use a variety of print and electronic resources to collect information and evidence as part of a research project.

• Analyze and communicate the logical connection among hypotheses, science concepts, tests conducted, data collected, and conclusions drawn from scientific evidence.

• Construct models, maps, and appropriately labeled diagrams to communicate scientific knowledge

• Communicate the steps and results from an investigation in written reports and oral presentations.

Supplies The following supplies are suggested specifically for Science. These should be brought every day.

• Two sharpened #2 pencils are needed each day

• 1 ballpoint pen

• Graph paper (used during specific units)

• Colored pencil and markers.

• 1- 2 pocket folder

• Student Planner

• Headphones or Earbuds

Science Work Policies

• Students are expected to put their name and the date on all of their work!

• Students should do all science work neatly in pencil or typed and submitted electronically

• Students should draw all lines with a straight edge or use computer graphing and drawing tools.

• Students should use a colored pencil for correcting their work

• Students earn full credit for correcting and re-submitting any work 5 days prior to the close of each term.

Grading Policies

4. Classwork is 70% of the science grade You will receive full credit on your classwork if you do the following:

• Demonstrate Level 2 – 4 behavior as described in the BEST system

• Participate in lessons and group work

• Use your class time effectively

• Complete your work neatly

• Make corrections either on your own or after receiving feedback

5. Summative Assessments and Projects- 20% of grade Tests will require corrections for full credit

6. Quizzes– 10% of grade Quizzes will require corrections for full credit

Absences

When you are absent, you must make up and correct any assignments completed while you were gone. You are responsible for checking with me and we will make a plan together for managing your missed work.
