Math Expectations

Welcome to Mrs. Jacks’ math class! I hope this will be a challenging and enjoyable year for you. You will learn to use your skills of mathematical reasoning to solve rigorous real-life math problems both individually and in a collaborative setting.

The Mathematical topics we will cover this year include Ratios and Proportional Relationships, The Number System, Expressions and Equations, Geometry, Statistics and Probability

We will work to learn and achieve the following learning goals:

• Students will understand ratio concepts and use ratio reasoning to solve problems.

• Students will apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division to divide fractions by fractions.

• Students will compute fluently with multi-digit numbers and find common factors and multiples.

• Students will apply and extend previous understandings of numbers to the system of rational numbers.

• Students will apply and extend previous understandings of arithmetic to algebraic expressions.

• Students will reason about and solve one-variable equations and inequalities.

• Students will solve real-world and mathematical problems involving area, surface area, and volume.

• Students will develop understanding of statistical variability.

• Students will summarize and describe distributions.

Supplies The following supplies are suggested specifically for math. These should be brought every day.

• Two sharpened #2 pencils are needed each day

• A math journal (I will supply this for you)

• Binder pouch or container designated specifically for math supplies

• Calculator (I will supply this for you)

• Graph paper (used during specific units)

• Colored pencil and markers.

• Student Planner

• Headphones or Earbuds

Math Work Policies

• Students are expected to put their name and the date on all of their work!

• We will be learning POWER which stands for Plan Organize Work Evaluate and Restate

• Students will be expected to employ POWER in order to show their thinking on real-life story style problems.

• Students should do all math work neatly in pencil.

• Students should draw all lines with a straight edge.

• Students should use a colored pencil for correcting their work

• Students earn full credit for correcting and re-submitting any work 5 days prior to the close of each term.

Grading Policies

1. Classwork is 70% of the math grade You will receive full credit on your classwork if you do the following:

• Demonstrate Level 2 – 4 behavior as described in the BEST system

• Participate in lessons and group work

• Use your class time effectively

• Use POWER

• Complete your work neatly in pencil

• Make corrections either on your own or after receiving feedback

2. Summative Assessments and Projects- 20% of grade Tests will require corrections for full credit

3. Quizzes– 10% of grade Quizzes will require corrections for full credit
