It is my philosophy, based on current best practice research, that students should engage in appropriate developmental learning experiences on a daily basis. This includes a variety of experiences including: family time, sports, music, dance, social skills building, scientific investigation, exploring new places, and reading a variety of literature. There will be minimal homework that is required from school, rather I will have resources on this website in case you choose to have your student work on academic skills outside of the school day.
According to current research, students should read on a daily basis. Students in 4th/5th grade should be reading for at least 30-45 minutes daily. Students can read any genre of literature, including magazines, and newspapers. Students can also read with someone, either sharing in the reading or having someone read to them. Students will be working on reading stamina (longer and stronger), comprehension, and fluency this year.
Students should work on fluency of math facts as needed. We will work on the facts during class time, but adding practice time at home is always helpful to increase speed and fluency.
Students will not receive math homework on a daily basis. If you would like your child to work on this area I will provide resources below that can be utilized.
Occasionally your child may need more time to work on unfinished class work.
