Course Descriptions:
Beginning Orchestra:
These courses are designed for students with no previous experience from any grade level. Band is for those interested in playing woodwind, brass, or percussion instruments. Orchestra is for those interested in playing violin, viola, cello or string bass. Students will learn to read music, fundamentals on their instrument, and have concerts throughout the year!
Intermediate Orchestra
Pre-requisite: 1 year formal training on a string instrument. This class is for students with about a year’s experience on a string instrument. Violinists should be comfortable in 1st position. Cello players should be comfortable in 1st and 3rd position. The class is designed for developing players who are looking for a chance to continue to develop their string techniques. We will play a wide range of musical styles from the Baroque to contemporary works. In addition to our 3 school concerts, the intermediate orchestra will also perform at other events during the year.
Chamber Orchestra:
Pre-requisite: 2 years formal training on an orchestral instrument and an audition. Designed for the most experienced players, this class will perform challenging music. Students should have experience with all 12 major scales along with shifting to at least third position. Beyond school concerts, festivals and other performances, students in this group will be invited to go on a special trip to Disneyland to perform in the parks and participate in the Disney Performing Arts Program.
Objectives:
This course is designed to give students a complete orchestra experience through individual and group practice and performances, and through lessons in music history and theory. Using the National Standards in Music model, students will be introduced to activities that will enhance their knowledge of music.
Program Goals
Create and develop existing playing skills and techniques
Know the care of the student's instrument
Read and notate music
Maintain a proper bow hold
Develop shifting technique
Develop vibrato
Develop, review, and perform with proper posture
Perform various styles of music, from various time periods
Achieve an understanding of more complex music theory and terminology
Develop expressive awareness and stylistic interpretation.
Develop knowledge and skills necessary to understand/perform a wide range of music
Listen to and analyze music using the vocabulary of music
6th Grade: 1 octave major scales: D, G, C, F, A
7th Grade: 2 octave major scales: E, B, Bb, Eb, + minor Scales: B, E, A, D, G
8th Grade: all 12 major and minor scales, plus the chromatic scale.
