We look forward to working with your children this year and hope that we can work together in making sure that their transition to middle school is smooth and the time they spend here productive. Parent support in this process is an important element. Here are some things you can do to help your child be successful this year:
Ask to see what your child did at school everyday (this includes looking at handouts that were distributed as well as the quality of work your child did).
Check your child's planner with the homework assignment page everyday to make sure that they have completed their assignments on time and in good quality.
Ask to see the graded quizzes/tests that were passed back. Since re-takes may be available in certain subject areas, it would be a good idea to identify which concepts your child is struggling with, and help them with the concepts if you are able to. Please remember that we are always here to help as well, so you can have your child e-mail us and make an appointment with us for extra help if necessary.
Check Synergy once every week or two and remind the student to re-take quizzes/tests (whenever available) and make up any missing work. Late work may be given partial credit. For that reason, it is better to turn it in late for some points as opposed to never doing it at all and getting 0 points. Please do not e-mail concerns about grades that have been posted but not yet returned. The time for questions is when the work has been passed back to the student.
You can e-mail us if you have questions or concerns. However, to build student independence and self-advocacy, please be aware that questions about assignments, grades, etc. should first be asked by the student. E-mail is the preferred mode of communication. We will try our best to respond in a timely fashion. THERE ARE NO PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES IN MIDDLE SCHOOL. However, exceptions will be made for struggling students and typically the teachers will initiate these meetings.
