Course Description
Writing: We will focus on writing using Lucy Calkins Units of Study writing workshops curriculum. There will be four main writing units: Restarting a Writing Life: From Notebooks to Independent Projects; Personal Narrative: Crafting Powerful Life Stories; Research Based Information Writing; Literary Essay: From Character to Compare and Contrast. We will also practice writing skills through our reading and history curriculum.
Reading: Our main reading curriculum comes from Inquiry by Design. This curriculum is a discussion-based and student centered approach to teaching English and is based on the following:
Close reading of complex informational and literary texts.
Writing in a range of genres including narrative, expository, and text-based explanations and arguments.
Reading and writing across multiple complex texts.
Small- and whole-group, text-based discussions.
Throughout the year, we will also have the opportunity to explore other literary texts and non-fictional material in both Language Arts and History.
Speaking and Listening: Our curriculum lends itself to frequent opportunities for small and large group discussions. Students will also be asked to write, practice, and deliver formal speeches throughout the year.
