What are Flights?
Here are a few things I pulled of of A.I. to explain the difference by the flight race format and a standard invitational: In high school cross country, a flight race (or "flighted format") is a specialized meet style where runners compete in separate mini-races rather than having all Varsity athletes line up together at once.
Instead of one massive Varsity race with 200+ athletes crowding the starting line, coaches submit their top 7 varsity runners ordered from #1 to #7. This order is based on many different factor not just time.
How Flight Races Work
Head-to-Head Tiers: Race 1 features only the #7 runners from every attending school. Race 2 features the #6 runners, and so forth, culminating in Flight 1 where all the #1 fastest runners face off directly.
Scoring Rules: Just like standard cross country, low score wins. Places are assigned points based on finishing position within each flight (1st place = 1 point, 2nd place = 2 points, etc.). A team's total score is calculated by adding up the points earned across all 7 flights. A perfect score in the flight format is 7 points and in the standard format it is 15 points.
