Artifact 2

20 Questions A.I. Activity

Summary Statement

This whole-class activity is for students in second through fifth grade. After watching an introductory video about deep learning and neural networks, students will take part in a game of 20 Questions. To begin the game, the teacher will share the rule that the images are animals. Students will then be able to ask yes or no questions to identify the animal.

The final image will be of a tree. After discussion, this difference from the original rule will help students to understand how artificial intelligence begins to create rules and adjust its perception.

Goal: Students will learn about hidden layers in computational thinking and apply that knowledge in a 20 questions activity to mimic neural networks in computers.

Standards:

  • ISTE Student 1d: Students understand the fundamental concepts of technology operations, demonstrate the ability to choose, use and troubleshoot current technologies and are able to transfer their knowledge to explore emerging technologies.

  • ISTE Student 5: Students develop and employ strategies for understanding and solving problems in ways that leverage the power of technological methods to develop and test solutions.
