Artifact 1

AI Sorting Activity

Summary Statement

This activity is intended as an introduction to Artificial Intelligence for students as young as Kindergarten by comparing how they think and sort objects and how AI can perceive, think, and sort. Students will view a robot sorting video, practice sorting objects and then follow directions for finding a "secret object" chosen by the teacher. If time and interest allow, students can create criteria for their own chosen "secret object" and give directions to a friend. Directions for each activity are in the notes under each slide.

Goal: Students will understand that a computer's brain mimics a human's ability to sort and categorize by doing a digital sort of shapes and food.

Standards:

  • ISTE Student 5: Students develop and employ strategies for understanding and solving problems in ways that leverage the power of technological methods to develop and test solutions.

  • ISTE Student 6c: Students communicate complex ideas clearly and effectively by creating or using a variety of digital objects such as visualizations, models, or simulations.
