All Nurse Aide students are required to have a watch with a second hand.
Course Description:
The Nurse Aide I course is the 1st year of a 2-year program that is taken the junior year of high school. This is an occupational preparation course that emphasizes the study of nursing occupations as related to health care. Students will study normal growth and development, simple body structure and function, and medical terminology. Students will receive training in patient-nursing assistant relationships; taking and recording vital signs; CPR and first aid. Students will also receive training in patient care such as bathing, feeding, and transporting patients while in the classroom and nursing home settings.
Course Objectives:
1) Determine legal responsibilities of the nurse aide.
2) Identify the rights of clients/residents
3) Identify examples of ethical nursing behavior.
4) Explain principles of infection control.
5) Perform safety procedures related to client care.
6) Follow OSHA regulations.
7) Provide culturally sensitive care to the client.
8) Demonstrate proficient communication skills.
Course Requirements:
1) Attend class as required by the Virginia Board of Education and Nursing (virtually or in person).
2) Bring required materials to class each day.
3) Participate in class discussions, group assignments, and skills demonstration.
4) Read required assignments.
5) Complete homework and classwork.
6) Submit work on time.
7) Attend be properly dressed and perform professionally during clinical experiences.
Attendance /Make up work:
Students are expected to attend class and clinicals regularly (this is a requirement by the Board of Nursing and SVCC), to many unexcused absences can result in being removed from the nursing program for not meeting program requirements. It is the student’s responsibility to request any missed work upon returning to class. The student will then have the number of days absent plus 1 to turn in makeup work.

There will be no exceptions to this requirement.
Uniform Policy:
Students are expected to wear uniforms that were issued the prior year. This consists of scrub top, scrub bottoms and a name tag. In addition to the uniform students should wear clean, closed toes shoes, and an analog watch with a second hand (no digital). When attending clinicals uniforms should be clean, nonwrinkled, with nametag. No jewelry. Students is expected to be well kept with hair pulled back and nails clean and trimmed without color.
***It is the student’s responsibility to replace the uniform
if it has become lost, stained, defaced or too small. ***
Nursing Clinical Experience Grading:
Nurse Aide students will be graded for their activities during the Clinical Experience. The areas of critique are similar to the evaluation the student would receive as an employee. If a student fails to attend clinicals without prior notification, student will receive a zero. If a student fails to follow the rules of the clinical setting, the student will receive a zero.
The following 10 criteria will be used to assess the student during clinicals:
Professionalism-behavior & attitude, use of proper medical terminology
Cooperation- proper work ethics with the nursing home staff
Assertiveness-speak with assigned nursing assistant for task list
Self-motivation-seek opportunities to utilize procedures learned in the classroom
Taking initiative-keep yourself busy, do not wait to be told to do something
Time management-planning care and performing with in time limits
Break and lunch abuse- begin/end on time, check in w/ instructor before & after
Proper procedural techniques-as learned and reviewed in the classroom
Communication -with residents and staff
Attire- proper dress, shoes, jewelry, personal hygiene and nametag, watch
Post clinical conferences-will be held directly after clinical or during the next class time. Each student will write a Nurse’s Note reflection for each clinical experience, and the Instructor will give an oral and written evaluation of each experience for each student.
