Course Description:
This course introduces the student to a variety of health care careers and develops basic skills required in all health and medical sciences. It is designed to help students understand the key elements of the U.S. health care system and to learn basic health care terminology, anatomy and physiology for each body system, pathologies, diagnostic and clinical procedures, therapeutic interventions, and the fundamentals of traumatic and medical emergency care.
Instruction emphasizes safety, cleanliness, asepsis, professionalism, accountability, and efficiency within the health care environment. Students also begin gaining job-seeking skills for entry into the health and medical sciences field.
Course Objectives:
1) Determine legal responsibilities of a healthcare provider.
2) Identify the rights of clients/residents.
3) Identify examples of ethical healthcare provider behavior.
4) Explain principles of infection control.
5) Perform safety procedures related to client care.
6) Follow OSHA regulations.
7) Explain educational requirements for different medical careers.
Course Requirements:
1) Attend class as required.
2) Bring required materials to class each day.
3) Participate in class discussions, group assignments, and skills demonstration.
4) Complete homework and classwork.
5) Read required assignments.
6) Submit work on time.
