Cardinal Learn (Blackboard) notifications are set at the user level. Each individual user controls the notifications they receive for each course. Instructors are NOT able to turn off notifications for courses. Instructors can make the course unavailable to students as they add content, grades, assignments, etc. and no notifications be sent until the course is once again made available to students.
Overdue notifications are functioning as designed by Blackboard. Every user in a course with the "Assignment Due" and/or the "Assignment Past Due" notifications set to "ON" will receive an email notification. Notifications are not tied to submissions made in the system, thus they go to everyone regardless of submission status. Users can select which notifications to receive per course or as a bulk setting. Notification settings need to be updated when students are enrolled in new courses as the bulk setting applies only to existing course enrollments, not future. Future enrollments will default to all notifications being "ON" as per the system setting.
1. Log in to Blackboard.
2. Click your name in the upper right corner to access the Global Navigation Menu.
3. Click the clock icon on the left navigation menu bar within the Global Navigation Menu.
4. The notification screen will open to a larger screen. Click the gear icon on the far right.
5. The “Show/Hide Notifications” menu will pop up and you can choose your settings. Once you have chosen, click save.
6. You can also change your notifications by clicking the “View Notification Settings” link at the bottom of the dropdown.
7. You can Edit Individual Course Settings or apply settings to all courses through Bulk Edit Notification Settings.
For Bulk Editing, click the “Courses I am teaching” or "Courses I am taking" link.
8. Use the sideways arrows to move desired courses from the Items to Select box to the Selected Items box.
9. Click the checkbox on the left to turn the Notifications On and Off.
Checkmarks mean the Notification is On.
A blank box means they are Off. You can also choose the method of notification on the right (Blackboard Dashboard or Email).
Click Submit in the lower right corner.
10. You will receive confirmation that your Notification Settings have been saved.
