The FNP track also requires 700 hours of supervised clinical experience, which will give you the hands-on skills that are an important part of the FNP role. Your faculty adviser will prompt and guide you throughout the program as you approach your clinical hours. Your clinical residency is done locally, and you may create a plan designed to allow flexibility around your work and family schedules. The local nursing residency is another way Catholic University designs their program requirements around the needs of working professionals and distance learners like you.
Students are always welcome to visit campus. However, there are two required clinical sessions on campus that will focus on teaching and student assessment.
The first one is scheduled upon the completion of Nurs 657 ( Advanced Health Assessment). This is considered the beginning of formal clinical work. Over the course of 3-4 days students will engage with faculty and classmates and learn more about each other and CUA resources. Scheduled workshops will be presented, allowing students to acquire select additional critical skills in assessment and diagnosis. The use of standardized patients and simulation will be employed to enhance learning and evaluate student competencies prior to beginning the clinical management sequence of courses.
The second clinical session on campus is scheduled upon the completion of the clinical management sequence: NURS 782,783, and 780.This on campus experience will again combine teaching and student assessment as well as social engagement for students as they near the completion of their degree. Utilization of standardized patients will support evaluation of student competencies. Outcomes of student performance at this point will assist faculty in planning with students the final supervised clinical experience Students will also engage with faculty who will advise them in their capstone presentation course.
