Clinton Township Middle School
The Hawk Herald
Vol. 17- April 26, 2024
Dear Families,
New Jersey Student Learning Assessments (NJSLA) begin next week. All grades will be testing in ELA on April 30 and May 1 and Math on May 3, 6, and 7. In addition, 5th/8th grade testing for science will happen on May 9 and 10.
Important Reminders
Students are not permitted to have smart watches or phones in the classroom during testing.
Please send Chromebooks fully charged each day of testing.
Students who arrive tardy to school after the day’s test session begins will not be able to join the test in session. Therefore, those students will have to make up the test during make-up week.
These tests are just one measure of our student performance. However, their standardized nature allows the school and district to evaluate our programs and instruction annually and in comparison with other similar districts. This helps us continue to improve.
Lastly, even though we expect students to do their best, they should not get stressed about them. In an effort to maximize success, we encourage students to get a good night’s sleep and eat a healthy breakfast during the testing window.
We appreciate your support as we work together to help all our students succeed!
Thank you.
Luke Mason

For Arbor Day, CTMS received a large Red Maple for planting from the Hunterdon County Tree Commission and the Arbor Day Foundation.
6th grade students have been busy conducting research to identify potential planting locations for the tree based on their findings considering many factors including:
Climate and growing conditions - temperature, sunlight exposure, soil type, and moisture requirements.
Space and Location - area with enough room for the tree to grow to its full size without being obstructed by buildings or other structures.
Aesthetic Considerations - factors such as landscaping design, visual impact, and the tree's contribution to the overall beauty of the area.
Students also were developing a care plan for the tree. This includes a watering schedule, soil preparation and pruning.
By engaging in this project, our students are not only learning about Red Maple trees and their care requirements but also developing important skills in critical thinking, problem-solving, and environmental stewardship

The children pictured serve as model CTMS students. Their citizenship, dedication and selfless attitudes are truly special to see in action on a daily basis. Although they will say that they do not need an award to do the right thing, we want to honor them anyway. Kindness, it’s not so random anymore!

On June 6th, CTMS Band, Chorus, and Orchestra members will be receiving expert feedback directly from High Note music festival adjudicators, followed by a trip to Dorney Park. This is an invaluable resource to further refine and improve student work. Two adjudicators evaluate student performances and provide us with written and recorded comments along with a numerical rating. The adjudicator’s recorded comments serve as a clinic when played for our students. These judges are all highly qualified, current or retired school music educators who understand exactly what they are hearing, and serve as an extra set of “professional ears” to evaluate our young musicians.
The trip to an amusement park provides our students with a tangible goal to work for throughout the school year in their music class. If your student is participating in this activity, please follow THIS LINK to give permission, as well as submit payment for the trip.

Our CTMS Green Team went on an outing to the Grayrock Farm Sanctuary last week. We met all the animals, who have been rescued and given a safe place to live a happy life just down the road from our school. Today, April 26th, we will have our first scrap "FEED BOX" donation day. The Green Team will collect food waste and bring it to the animals at the Grayrock Farm. Eliminating food waste is part of the big plan to reduce, reuse & recycle!
Artline, our Enrichment art group, had an awesome time on our trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art last week. Partnering with students from Clinton Public Schools, we had an amazing museum tour and gained more insight to the world of art.
Congratulations to our two winning Law Adventure teams! Two of our four teams won first place in the state for thier grade level! We will go on a trip to the New Jersey Bar Foundation and perform our case in front of a judge and jury. Congratulations, teams!
Thank you to everyone who came out to support our student entrepreneurs at the TREP$ Student Marketplace! We had 83 businesses this year selling food, crafts, home decor and more! Shout out to all the parents and teachers who guided the students along the way and made it happen.
