The student-centred pedagogy approach of Problem-Based Learning
In 2021 Christ the King transitioned from Inquiry Based Learning to Problem Based Learning. Both are models of inquiring, with the unique difference being that one model begins with the problem (Problem Based) and the other ends with a problem (Inquiry Based). In our efforts to prepare students for the 21st century, we believe that beginning with a problem opens our students up to a world of possibilities and solutions.
This student centred, constructivist approach begins by presenting students with a provocation that requires them to identify the problem within the provocation and design a plausible solution, all the while considering the perspectives of others to enhance their solution. Most importantly, Problem Based Learning is steeped in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) and requires rigorous levels of thinking as the students work through the process.
