This guide not only shows you what mixed media animation is, but gives you step by step instructions for creating your own. Mixed media in art is when multiple mediums such as digital and traditional art techniques are combined to create a unique result. I found my own passion for mixed media animation through social media and all the creators I saw online, and I had to teach myself how to do it through youtube and trial and error. Eventually I was able to create my own (@ccoffees_espresso) and now its become a passion of mine!

Mixed media animation is a technique of combining animation techniques such as 3d animation, live footage, 2d animation, still images, or text to create a unique effect. I will be focusing on the blend of live footage and 2d hand draw animation. This kind of animation can use all kinds of physical material like colored pencils, fabric, paper, markers, or glitter!

If you want to try doing mixed media, here is a step by step guide on how I do it! This will walk you through how to create mixed media animations using digitial video with handrawn animations over it but there are many other ways to do mixed media. The method below is similar to the examples and artists I've linked :)
To make a mixed media animation the first step is to find the footage you want to animate over! You can take your own videos, use stock videos, or use clips from movies or music videos (check for copyright first if you plan to post it online or share it)
you are welcome to edit said footage beforehand if you want too! My favorite thing to add is lyrics and animated text if I plan to do a specific song
The Frame rate is how many still images are displayed per second aka fps (frames per second); the lower the frame rate the choppier the video.
When making a mixed media animation, you donโt want to animate over every frame (that could be thousands of frames); instead, you change it to around 8-12 fps. 8 if you want the choppiest look, 12 if you want it smoother.
You can also easily do it on after effects, there are many youtube tutorials online.
In order to create an animation, you need to be able to draw on each frame individually. First you must turn the video into a sequence of images. It is important that all your files are named in numerical order to make the later steps go smoother. You can use after effects if you'd like, but there are also free online tools:
for after effects you simply put the video in, then export but change the format to image sequence
Online tool - there is limit to how much of a video you can do at a time, so I recommend doing it in segments then putting them all back in a folder together
A contact sheet is a tool used for mixed media animation that makes it easier to get all the frames in order. All the frames are laid out in a grid with each page having around 2-25 frames (put example)
To make one there are a couple techniques
The easiest one uses photoshop: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3L-PpYKcbSo
There are also online tools/websites (you do have to do one sheet at a time so decide how many you want per sheet and upload that many each time): https://image.flogvit.com/en/tools/contact-sheet/
Once youโve downloaded your contact sheets to your computer and theyโre all in a file, you can print them (make sure you print them in order so you donโt mix them up. I also recommend numbering the corners as you print to prevent confusion. You can do color or black and white (if you do color there will be more contrast making the details of the original video more visible).
This is completely up to you, part of mixed media is experimenting with materials! Some techniques and tools I recommend are:
Colored pencil, markers, paint pens, any drawing tool
Cutouts with X-acto knife, printed images, and stickers
3d materials like yarn, gems/rhinestones, fabric, etc.
This is the most tedious step, but also one of the last! There are also a couple different ways to to this
Scan your contact sheets again and screenshot each individual frame, takes a long time but gets very good results. Make sure after you have all the frames you convert them into pngs or jpegs to make the next step easier. It also helps if you make each screenshot the same size so it looks consistent.
Take photos of each frame, this can take longer but is more hands on. Set up a station with good overhead lighting and either set up a camera or your phone above your contact sheet. Then take a photo of each frame, one at a time!
this video tutorial explains how to take photos with a physical set up
After you have every frame as a photo or file its time to reassemble into a video! There are two ways I've done it,ย on after effects and capcut. I find after effects not only easier but more exact.
In after effects there is a pre-programed way to do it easily! (one tip make sure all your frames are in png or jpeg format)
video tutorial -ย may look slightly different depending on what computer you have, but essentially the same idea (do make sure you select ........ if you're on a mac)
the capcut method is less exact because all you do is import all the photos in order and speed it up:
import all the frames in order, then export that video
put back into capcut again, this time as a video and speed it up to your desired speed
You can do whatever music or sound effects you want, or add none at all! The ones I've made have been to music videos so I just use the song that goes along with it. If you plan to post or share it anywhere do make sure you're using copyright free music (you can also add the music in instagram and youtube sometimes if you want to use copyrighted music).
If you don't have access to a printer or would prefer to do it completely digitally there are ways! I haven't tried it but here is a video tutorial
Don't know where to find footage for a base video, music, or possible collage pieces? here are some places to look!
