About the program

What is genomics?

Genomics is the study of genomes. We use molecular and bioinformatic tools to answer questions about genome structure, function, evolution, and mapping.

What is the GREAT program?

  • The GREAT program is an initiative funded by the NIH's National Human Genome Research Institute to train undergraduate students for careers in genomics.

  • Participating students undergo a comprehensive, 1.5-year mentored research and professional development training program at California State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB), and participate in a summer research internship at UC Santa Cruz.

What are the goals of the program?

  • To prepare students through mentoring, professional development, workshops, and coursework for a mentored research education program related to genomics

  • To provide students with faculty and peer mentorship, establishment of community, exposure to research and professional role models, field-relevant professional development, and financial support to attract, retain, and graduate CSUMB students in the field of genomics
