A Model for Preparing New K-12 Teachers For Inclusive and Effective Computer Science Teaching

With the support of a grant from Google, Inc., faculty from The College of St. Scholastica are creating a sustainable and permanent curriculum strand that provides CS content knowledge and methods for pre-service teachers in all licensure areas offered at the college.

This strand will consist of modules that provide computer science conceptual understanding (theory) and experiences with students (practice), with emphasis on computational thinking.

Equally important is a focus on equity and broadening computer science participation. Our goal is for pre-service teachers to understand the importance of making computer science educational experiences accessible to all K-12 students and acquire effective strategies to encourage students from all backgrounds to become creators, and not just users, of technological solutions. Our project and the model we are developing supports the national "CS for All" movement that espouses the idea that computational thinking is a new literacy that all students should have the opportunity to learn.
