All students enrolled in a state approved CTE program must be associated with the student Leadership Organization associated with that CTE program. The National FFA organization is the associated student organization for Agriculture Education in the United States. Students that are enrolled in any Ag class at CSHS will become affiliate members of FFA. They have the option of joining FFA as an "active member" while enrolled in an Ag class.
Agriculture & Natural Resources students work with our Young 5's program each month. Students prepare hands on lessons for our Young 5's kiddos helping them learn about Community Workers, Agriculture and much more. This helps our younger students development a vocabulary by strengthening a dynamic community of learners through Career and Technical Education.
Classes should be taken in a specific order for students to best understand content and advance forward with agriculture education at Cedar Springs High School. Course Sequence and information can be found below.
9th - 10th Grade
2 Semesters
We recommend starting as freshman or Sophomore.
Topics include:
Animal Anatomy & Physiology, Animal Genetics & reproduction, Domestic Animal Production, Animal Health & Nutrition, Plant, Anatomy & Physiology, Soils & Plant Nutrition, Impacts of sustainability on AFNR activities and practices.
This course also introduces students to the National FFA organization and requires students to compete in either a leadership contest or Skills contest, or both. Students will have two weeks to self-teach and prepare for FFA skills contest in class. By the end of this course, students will receive their FFA Greenhand Degree.
10th - 11th Grade
Fall semester only.
Prerequisite: Agriculture & Natural Resources Biology
This course is the second year of the Agriculture, Food & Natural Resources Science Pathway and focuses its attention to anything and everything outdoors. Concepts range from Conservation of Wildlife, habitat, land, soil, water and forest conservation & management all the way to sport and recreation. Students will be in the classroom and outdoors learning about these concepts. Students can expect to be outdoors putting indoor classroom concepts into practice. At the completion of the course, students will be prepared to take the Ducks Unlimited, Ecology and Conservation Management Certification Test. Students will also receive an Earth Science credit for completing this course.
10th - 11th Grade
Spring semester only.
CTE Segments: 6, 8
Prerequisite: Agriculture & Natural Resources and Animal Science.
This course gives students an eye opening and hands on experience within the landscape and the Greenhouse. Students will dive into topics of Plant biology, nutrition, soil & soil medium, horticulture, greenhouse management, business management, environmental impacts from horticulture, vegetable production, composting, hydroponics, fertilizer, careers in horticulture and more.
11th Grade
Fall semester only.
Prerequisite: Agriculture & Natural Resources Biology, Environmental & Natural Resources Management, and Plant Science
This course introduces students to the amazing world of animal production. Topics include, animal domestication, animal use, animal rights vs animal welfare, skeletal systems, digestive systems, health, behavior, reproduction, and an introduction into different animal industries of agriculture.
Students will raise Broiler chickens in class from chick to finish. Students will learn about animal nutrition, handling, welfare and proper care. Four students per class will be selected to compete in the Michigan FFA Broiler Contest. These students will get to witness industry standards in animal slaughter.
11-12th Grade

Prerequisite: Agriculture & Natural Resources, Animal Science and Plant Science.
Focus: Model integrity, ethical leadership and effective management. (Career Ready Practice I.A.8)
Course Description as told by students:
This class will undoubtedly apply to students’ everyday lives after High School. The primary focus of this class is Leadership. The concepts in this course assist in the development of leadership skills through self concept, unintentional influence, public speaking, individual reflection, event planning, parliamentary procedure and volunteer opportunities. This course offers a chance to get involved with the school and the community through an internship project and service learning hours. Additionally, this course provides an introduction to the FFA organization through numerous activities. This course centers around the development of leadership attributes through the progress of the individual. This course puts an emphasis on perception and guidance, consisting of applicable concepts for life.
11th - 12th Grade
Prerequisite: Agriculture & Natural Resources Biology, Environmental & Natural Resources Management, Plant Science, Animal Science & Leadership For Tomorrow.
Industry Certifications are offered through iCEV online. This is our online agriculture curriculum. The agriculture department will provide students with the cost to complete the certification. If the students does not receive a 70% or higher on the exam, they will need to reimburse the department $40 in certification fees.
