Description:
HF2353 required districts to provide a way for families to identify digital tools used in the district for learning within 60 days of the start of school in 2022. In order to quickly identify tools used in such a large district, we implemented a program called LearnPlatform. This allowed us to quickly gather information on what tools teachers were using, identify where data protection agreements were needed, and create a public library for viewing of the tools for stakeholders.
Reflection:
Using the LearnPlatform technology as a way to manage our library and identify tools used by teachers that did not yet have a data privacy agreement saved our team a great deal of time. It also allowed us to provide our online resource for families quickly while still working on our other duties supporting teachers and students.
Artifact: St. Cloud 742 Tools Public Library
Description:
Student data privacy has become a hot-button issue in education, especially in Minnesota with the passing of HF2353. One of the things district 742 has done to insure that student data is not used inappropriately by third party vendors is to require a data privacy agreement with each vendor. I've worked with our director of technology to obtain these with vendors.
Reflection:
While protecting student data is important, it is also a difficult at times to work with vendors to come to an agreement. Often the roadblocks are just language in these contracts, but those can be difficult to negotiate. Ultimately, a district should not provide data to a third party vendor if that vendor cannot or will not protect it.

Edpuzzle DPA (public information)
Description:
During the completion of my hours, I have both attended and watched livestreamed school board meetings. These meetings lasted anywhere from 1.5 to 5 hours depending on the content discussed. Public comment time was allowed at the beginning of each (this part is not livestreamed). Topics covered ranged from financial, to human resource, to activites, to teaching and learning, and more.
Reflection:
Watching and attended school board meetings gave me a different perspective of the inner workings of a district. I learned a great deal about school funding including: ESSER, shortfalls, subsidies, grants, etc. I also learned a great deal more about district policies and the process that goes into their creation and review.
