Welcome to 4th Grade!

Fourth grade is an exciting year. Students learn to work independently and cooperatively. We will do many project-based units and integrate various subjects in the lessons. Here are some highlights of the curriculum.

Reading and Language Arts

Students will read selections from the textbook as well as a variety of chapter books. Some will be read together in class and some read independently. We will read fiction and non-fiction in a range of genres. Comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, spelling, and writing skills will also be covered.

Math

In math we will review the basics of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. We go on to fractions, decimals, measurement, and geometry. Fourth graders also work on word problems and develop critical thinking skills.

Social Studies

California history is the focus in 4th grade. We start with the Native Americans, the Californios, missions, and settlers. Then we study immigrants, Gold Rush, geography, and map skills as well. Students will be required to do a mission report due in January. More information to follow. Most of the work will be done in class and counts for history, language arts, and religion grades.

Science

Fourth grade science covers rocks and minerals in Earth Science, which ties in nicely with the gold rush! In Physical Science, we will work with magnetism and electricity. Our Life Science unit will be about animal adaptations, cells, tissues, organs, and body systems.
