Have you ever made something or took something apart to see how it worked or changed it into something else? For many of us, making something is both challenging and rewarding. Even though it can be fun, finding the time and place to tinker can be a problem—unless you have access to a Makerspace!
But what, exactly, is it? Makerspace is a MINDSET - a way of thinking about creative problem-solving. In our schools, the makerspace is an actual room that contains tools and materials, allowing students to enter with an idea and leave with a complete project. The goal is to work together to learn, collaborate, and share. Makerspaces allow us to explore, create new things, or make things better.
Makerspaces encourage natural creativity. Students practice critical thinking skills, challenge their imaginations, and come up with solutions to real-world problems. Makerspaces are really helpful for STEAM activities because they give students hands-on opportunities to practice their STEAM skills..
The most important thing about Makerspaces are safe places for students to “fail.” Getting the right answer is not as important as the process of learning. Makerspaces allow students to learn by trial and error, getting closer to the solution with each attempt.
Please visit our Makerspaces during Parent-Teacher Conferences in December to view the projects the CSDNB students have created during Trimester 1.
