Voter preregistration is new this year. The Michigan Legislature passed it to make voting more accessible for our state’s youngest citizens. Everyone between the ages of 16 and 17 and a half is eligible to preregister to vote. When you go to the Secretary of State’s Office for the first time to get your license or state ID, you can register and will automatically be registered to vote as soon as you turn 18. You still have to be 18 to vote, but the new voter preregistration will help to streamline the process.
For students who aren’t quite ready to get their driver’s license, but are 16, they can still preregister online at Michigan.gov/Vote or at Dearborn Heights City Hall at the City Clerk’s Office.
