Mike Farthing


Head Coach

Coach Farthing is in his 17th year coaching cross country and/or track.  For the past 4 seasons, Coach Farthing has served as the sprint coach in addition to coaching horizontal jumps and hurdles.  He served as an assistant girls cross country coach from 2016-2021.  From 2016-2019, the girls team placed in the top 5 at the state meet with a 3rd place finish in 2018. Prior to coaching cross country, Coach Farthing served as an assistant with the DGS girls track team during the 2016 season.  The girls team finished in 5th place at the state meet that year highlighted by All-State finishes by Shaliyah Dixon-Tucker in the 100m dash and 100m hurdles. Prior to DGS,  Coach Farthing served as both an assistant and head girls coach at Westmont High School from 2011-2015.  In 2015, Westmont placed 6th at the girls state 1A track meet highlighted by Annie Carlson's All-State finishes in the 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles, 200m, and triple jump.  Coach Farthing also serves as the DGS football speed coach. He has also coached as a youth club track coach and junior high cross country coach in the Westmont school district where he teaches.

Coach Senf has worked with the Mustangs Track and Field Team for the past 7 seasons. This is his 7th year coaching at DGS working with the Boys Cross Country team during the fall. Prior to his time at South High School, Senf spent one year as an assistant coach at Niles West High School working with the distance programs during both the fall and spring seasons. Before coaching Senf ran for Illinois State University completing at the Division I level at distances ranging from 1,500 to 10,000 meters.   

Brian Caldwell

This is his 17th year coaching Track at DGS and he’s also been the head coach of the Boys Cross Country program for 17 seasons. Prior to South, Caldwell spent 4 seasons as an assistant coach for both Cross Country and Track at Carthage College where he worked with numerous All-Americans and National Champion in the hurdles. Before coaching, he competed in both Cross Country and Track, specializing in the decathlon, at Carthage while being a team captain for 3 years in both sports. 

David Lee

Coach Lee has served as the throwing coach at DGS for the past 8 years. Prior to joining the Track program, he was the Head Freshman Wrestling Coach and Freshman Football Defensive Line Coach at South. Previously he has coached the throws at several high schools in Chicago, East St. Louis, Macomb, and in Tennessee. Prior to coaching, he competed in Football and Track at Western Illinois University. Lee brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the program. Lee is a proud alumni of East St. Louis Sr. High School.

Juankeem Finley

Coach Finley is a proud alum of Downers Grove South High School. After graduating from DGS, Coach Finley competed at Robert Morris University in Chicago.  Coach Finley is starting his 2nd season at DGS primarily coaching high jumpers. Last season, Coach Finley coached 3 jumpers to 6'0" or better. 

Greg Maloney

Coach Maloney started his teaching and coaching career at St. Ignatius Prep in Chicago coaching wrestling and track for 4 years.  In 2003, Coach Maloney came to Downers Grove South. He served as the freshman and JV wrestling coach for 19 years.  The past three years he has been an assistant coach with the boys cross country program.

Michelle Gagnard

Volunteer Assistant - Sprints


Coach Gagnard will be assisting our sprint group. She is the founder/head coach of the Chicago Flyers Youth Track & Cross Country Club. Since founding her club in 2009, Coach Gagnard has coached over 1,600 athletes! She has trained 2 National Champions, 15 State Champions and 23 Top 10 National Athletes. The Flyers cross country teams have won the AAU State XC Championship twice, in 2020 won the Northern National AAU XC Championship and four times placed as a top 3 team at the Cross Country Coaches National Youth Championship with 12 top 20 medalist. In 2019, 25 former Flyers were running for their D1 and D3 college programs.
