Dear Channahon 17 Parents and Guardians,
As you have likely heard, the State of Illinois has provided flexibility on how to approach teaching and learning during school emergency days and ‘snow days’. As a result, Channahon District 17 offers 'e-learning days’. This innovative approach to learning ensures that instruction does not stop during inclement weather. E-learning days will apply to all students in grades K-8. Students who attend Channahon Schools for pre-k, early childhood, and the CAB program will not participate in the CSD17 e-learning program on an emergency day.
In the past, if a snow day were called, that ‘instructional day’ was tacked on to the end of the school year. This often resulted in a lost day of contextual instruction. Unfortunately, a day at the end of the year cannot address concepts and skills learned in an earlier term. This also extended the school year which caused many scheduling conflicts for many of our students and families. While we may still require the use of a traditional emergency day at times, we will make every effort to call an ‘e-learning’ day instead.
Parents will not be expected to assume the role of the teacher during an e-learning day. Our plan will ensure that teachers and support staff will be available to assist students with their assignments during the hours of the regular school day. The assignments for e-Learning are designed to be engaging and meaningful and will allow students to learn while at home. Students will be required to log and submit evidence of their learning experiences in order to receive attendance credit for the day. Further, if students were unable to participate during the e-Learning day, accommodations will be made to assist them in making up the missed work.
For more information on e-learning days including an FAQ page, please visit our e-learning website, which can be accessed on our website (www.csd17.org) under the ‘parents’ tab (school closing info). If you have any additional questions please reach out to your child’s classroom teacher.
Thank you for your continued support of Channahon School District 17!
