School Counselors have shifted away from the term "guidance" as it no longer represents the wide range of practices we utilize today. "Guidance" counseling historically has been representative of a counselor's work with students on their vocational and career aspirations. School Counselors provide so much more today, although vocational interests can be included in our work. School Counselor's adhere to the American School Counseling Association national standards and focus on the following areas of development:
Academic
Career
Social/Emotional
By focusing on these three main areas, School Counselors can help prepare a student for a successful educational career. In order to meet the student's needs in these areas, School Counselors work closely with the following individuals as an advocate for the student's specific needs:
Teachers
Support Specialist
Parents
Outside Agencies
