What are coaching inns

Coaching inns are places where people stayed for a short period of time such as 1 or 2 days for a low price.  They provided food and drink and they would have had a large bar and dining area. Coaching inns were used by travellers using stagecoaches.

They would have also had large stables to keep the horses as well as vets and hosslers to keep them healthy.

When coaching inns become popular?

Coaching inns came to England in the 1500s and they started to become popular in the mid 17th century.  Coaching inns were an important part of the main transport routes.

What was the problem travellers faced on the road and why was Wetherby such an important place?

The problem they faced was the highway men who would steal things from travellers and rich people. Wetherby was such an important place because it was exactly 199 miles away from Edinburgh and 201 miles from London which is basically in between both of them, which meant lots of people would stop half way.

Did you know?

The Swan and Talbot's inn has a metal bar behind it which was used a long time ago to clean peoples boots before they went into the inn .

The Great North Road

Did you know that the Great  North Road was made by the Romans?

The A1 also known as the Great North Road is the longest numbered road in the United Kingdom, at 410 miles. It connects London, (the capital of England) with Edinburgh, (the capital of Scotland)!
