The Building Committee reviewed three project options for the Middle School.
Renovate
Renovate as new (55% renovation + 45% new)
New
The first option is to renovate the existing building. There were a number of shortfalls with the project including but not limited to:
Not able to meet recommended classroom size for all rooms
9,600 ft2 shortfall per educational specifications
Lack of bathrooms throughout the building
Eight construction phases; About 36-48 months to complete the project.
$33.8M estimated cost to Cromwell
The second option was to renovate the core spaces (offices, gym, auditorium, etc) and build a new academic wing to the west. This option did overcome some of the challenges outlined in option 1.
Three construction phases; About 36 months to completion.
$32.7M estimated cost to Cromwell
The third option was a brand new build on the same property as the existing school.
Meets all criteria in the statement of need and creates a state-of-the-art STEAM school.
Two construction phases; Estimated 24 months to completion.
No disruption to the students or staff.
$35.7M estimated cost to Cromwell.
After reviewing the benefits and risks of each project the Building Committee voted unanimously on 3/30/2022 to move forward with Option 3.
