The principle of Māori Perspectives honours the status of tangata whenua in this land and the value of indigenous knowledge in enriching and guiding learning and action.
At Cromwell Primary School, we place great value on the stories that belong to this place. As soon as you enter our kura, you can see nods to these throughout our space. From our waharoa at one entrance to our school to the pou at the other, these stories are visible to all and woven into our programmes. Once during each term, we have a Mihi Whakatau to welcome our new tamariki and their whanau to our place, we follow this with shared kai for the parents and kaiako to welcome and bridge the gap between school and home. Our Kapa Haka group is an integral part of honouring Māori Perspectives and all are welcome. We work with local experts to ensure our tikanga is practised correctly, and to enrich the knowledge and experiences of the tamariki and kaiako involved in the group. We also run a group for more junior members of our school so they can become involved as they are often inspired by our older Kapa Haka students and can't wait to have a go themselves.
Local experts are valued for the development of our programmes for tamariki and kaiako
