Empowered Students are enabled to participate in a meaningful way in the life of their early childhood centre or school. Their unique perspectives are valued for the knowledge and insight that they bring, and they are supported to take action for real change.
Recycling Team
This video was written and directed by our passionate and self-appointed recycling team. We have a group of volunteers who collect the paper recycling once per week and sort through it to make sure that our paper recycling is up to standard. These children were disappointed to see that our standards were slipping. They decided to make a movie to send out to the whole school to re-educate new students and teachers, and remind everyone else about the standards we expect. The tamariki researched how much paper costs and decided on the important points to include in their video. The video was then released to students and staff. Video starring, written and directed by Mieke Low, Leah Philip & Grace DeVilliers. Filmed by Miss Joyce 2020.

Agents of Change - Hārewa Hub
The year 2 children of the Hārewa Hub were inspired to become agents of change. This hub of 50 tamariki had a choice about whether they were interested in finding out about bees or water. From here, the tamariki were encouraged to find out as much as they could and then to identify problems they saw as needing attention. The tamariki were supported by their kaiako to identify problems, brainstorm and plan solutions, and then carry them out.
