Your children are hard at work in their fifth grade level classrooms understanding how to multiply and divide multidigit numbers. Many of my fifth grade students are uneasy about their abilities to when it comes to division and often heavily rely on skip counting for multiplication.
In order to be successful multiplying and dividing multidigit numbers, your child needs some background skills.
Adding and subtracting multidigit numbers.
Multiplying and dividing single digit numbers.
Multiplying a single digit number by a multidigit number.
Understanding, explaining and using the concept that every place value space is ten times greater then the one before it or times less then the one after it.
Students will soon be working on applying these skills to fractions. This is a very big math deal! We want them to have a great and true understanding of operations and fractions.
