KEI SAKAYAMA RECEIVES SAKURA GRANT FOR NORTHERN VALLEY REGIONAL HIGH SCHOOL AT DEMAREST

Kei Sakayama received a $1200Sakura Grant from the Japan Commerce Association of Washington D.C. for the 2016-2017 academic year. Her plans are to hold tea ceremony lessons for students and invite Taiko performers to the school community.
CATHERINE FISCO AND KRISTIN WINGATE RECEIVE SAKURA GRANT FOR CRANFORD PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Through Fisco-sensei and Wingate-sensei's collective efforts, the Cranford Public Schools' Japanese Program was awarded a $450 Sakura Grant via the Japan Commerce Association of Washington D.C. for the 2016-2017 academic year. Their plans are to hold a Sushi Workshop in Spring 2017 for all students and Japan Club members in the district. Reknowned sushi chef, Mr. Takahashi, of Wasabi (Ridgewood, NJ) will visit Cranford High School and show students how to make sushi as well as talk about the history of sushi-making in Japan.
The purpose of the Sakura Grant Program is to support public, private, and charter/magnet schools that provide Japanese language and/or Japanese cultural education to students at the K-12 level in Connecticut, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Delaware, and Virginia. PRINCETON HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS RECEIVE HONORS

2013 school year has been very exciting for Princeton High School's Japanese program. Sarah Xie, a Japanese III student, received a grant from the JET-MIP(Japan Foundation Memorial Invitation Program). She traveled with 32 other students from all over the US and go to Japan for two weeks with a focus in the Tohoku region. The students participated in an exchange program with Japanese students, saw the current condition of recovery in the region, and acted as symbolic bridges to enhance the goodwill between Japan and the US.
Elizabeth Maxey was awarded 3rd place for Princeton University Japanese Speech Contest of intermediate and advanced level. She has been attending University Japanese Intermediate class after she completed AP Japanese last year. She competed alongside of other brilliant university students and performed very well. She also won the FLENJ essay contest and received a $1000 scholarship.
KRISTIN WINGATE RECEIVES SAKURA GRANT FOR RIDGE HIGH SCHOOL

Wingate-sensei was awarded an $800 Sakura Grant from the Japan Commerce Association of Washington D.C. for the 2013-2014 academic year for Ridge High School's Japanese Program. Her plans are to have a Taiko performance open to the Basking Ridge community in February/March as well as a Sushi Workshop for the Japanese classes at Ridge High School.

KEI SAKAYAMA RECEIVES THE BERGEN COUNTY TEACHER RECOGNITION AWARD

For the 2012-2013 academic year, Sakayama-sensei was recognized for her outstanding contributions at Northern Valley Demarest High School. Teachers nominated for this award displayed exceptional and effective use of instructional techniques and methods, an establishment of a productive classroom climate and rapport with students, and a development of feelings of self-worth and love of learning in students. We want to congratulate and thank Sakayama-sensei for all of her hard work and dedication to her students and instruction of Japanese language and culture!
NJATJ'S ANNUAL JAPANESE LANGUAGE AND CULTURE STUDY AWARDS

NJATJ hosted the annual Japanese Language and Culture Study Award ceremony on March 15 at Seton Hall University. This year 35 students from 15 different schools ( 9 high schools and 6 colleges) in NJ were awarded.
Each awardee presented a short speech on "What I Have Learned by Studying Japanese" in Japanese before receiving the award.
This year's guest speaker/presenter was Mr. Fernando Rojas who taught English through JET program in Fukui,Japan after graduating from Columbia University. He gave us up-to-date information on JETas well as his personal experiences in Japan.
We also had a wonderful Taiko drum performance by Taikozoku lead by Glenn Webber. Prof.Webber is the head of the Percussion Dept. at Seton Hall University, and he showed us a very informative power point presentation on the Japanese taiko drums, and his company performed a very powerful taiko.
