According to John Whiteclay Chambers II in his book Cranbury, there were several families of free Blacks in town from at least the late 18th century. These families included the Greens, Jenkins, Ditmars, Thompsons, Freemans, Littles, and Valentines. Individuals with these last names are buried mainly in, what has historically been known as, the "colored section" of Brainerd Cemetery. More recent families even have their own plots. For example, both the Nixon family and the Titus family have their own family plots in cemetery-also located in the "colored section."
